Choosing Between Marble and Travertine Pavers: A Comprehensive Guide

Choosing Between Marble and Travertine Pavers: A Comprehensive Guide

When it comes to paving your backyard, both marble and travertine stones offer distinctive features and benefits. Although they look similar, they have significant differences in terms of durability, maintenance, and aesthetic appeal. This guide will delve into the difference between these two options, to help you make a well-informed decision for your home improvement project.

Understanding Marble

Marble is a calcium-based stone that’s known for its luxurious appeal and relatively high resilience to weather changes. Due to its well-polished finish and vibrant color variations, it offers an elegant and sophisticated look to your space.

Pros of Marble

  1. Durable and resilient
  2. Unique patterns and color combinations
  3. Incredible shine and reflective properties

Cons of Marble

  1. Can get slippery when wet
  2. High maintenance requirements
  3. More expensive option

Understanding Travertine

Travertine, on the other hand, is a sedimentary rock that’s typically available in warm earth tones. It offers a more rustic and natural look, making it an ideal choice for traditional or Mediterranean-themed spaces.

Pros of Travertine

  1. Environment friendly due to its natural sourcing
  2. Heat resistant, ideal for poolside installation
  3. Available in various finishes including tumbled, polished, and honed

Cons of Travertine

  1. Can be sensitive to acidic substances
  2. Possibly requires frequent sealing to prevent staining
  3. Surface pores can collect dirt and debris over time

Marble vs Travertine: What’s the Best Choice?

Your choice between marble and travertine will largely depend on your personal preferences, design style, and usage requirements. While marble offers a high-end look, travertine brings in a natural and timeless appeal. If durability is your primary concern, marble could be a better fit for you. However, if you’re inclined toward a more rustic look, travertine might be your best bet.

FAQs

  1. Is travertine more expensive than marble? The cost of both materials varies widely depending on the source, color, and grade. Generally, marble tends to be more expensive than travertine.

  2. Do both materials require professional installation?Yes, to ensure longevity and to maintain the aesthetics, professional installation is recommended for both materials.

  3. Can I use either material for my entire outdoor space?Yes, both materials are ideal for outdoor spaces including patios, pool decks, and walkways. However, consider their individual features and maintenance requirements.

Conclusion

When it comes to making the final decision between marble and travertine pavers, it’s important to balance your design goals with the practicality of each material. While marble offers a luxurious and polished look, travertine brings a natural and earthy feel to your outdoor spaces. Remember, whichever type of stone you choose, it can definitely enhance the value and aesthetic appeal of your home.

Our project involved a complete removal, expansion and replacement of pool and lenai pavers as well as a new screen cage. Coordination of the screen and paver contractors requires a lot of forethought to schedules, weather and product availability. Mid-project, we were faced with Hurricane Ian and county permitting delays. Despite these outside glitches, Pure Hardscapes got the job done. The owner, Chance, was in constant contact with us for scheduling and product availability from Italy. The project manager, David, would listen to our comments and implement changes where needed. David's work ethic is admirable. The office manager, Nicole, coordinated the efforts of the field crew with the cage company and was always very responsive. After completion of the paver installation, the cage installers cracked one of the porcelain pavers. Nicole was able to have David return to the job site within 2 hours and replace the cracked paver, resulting in no time loss for the cage installers. Before, during and after the project, the crew at Pure Hardscapes took a personal interest in our needs and wants. I would not hesitate to recommend Pure Hardscapes to others.George Christofely

I wish Chance would run other businesses as well because I would hire him in a heartbeat. Communication was excellent and the price was the best from all 3 companies quoted. We had a couple last minute additions and he had no problem accommodating our request. He runs his company very professionally with modern tools like online contract signing and payment which makes it very convenient. But he also has an old school touch. We've received a couple hand written cards and follow up calls from him which really shows the kind of business he runs. See the photos, the work speaks for itself.

I moved to Naples in April 2021and purchased a home that I wanted to make some changes to. I called many contractors and companies to try to get estimates with, and no one ever returned my calls. The only one who personally reached out to me was Chane , the owner of Hardscapes! I kept getting excuses such as covid and everyone is very busy. I find it disrespectful when you reach out to someone and finally get an appointment for them to come to your home to give you an estimate to only be stood up! This unfortunately happened on more than one occasion. When you deal with Chance and his company they are punctual, respectful, and they always return calls and emails. I wish everyone I had to deal with to get something done was as professional and kind as Chance is. I will continue to refer him to my friends and anyone I hear that is looking to get any kind of hard scape done to their home. Dealing with him and his company is a pleasure!Amanda McDonald Naples Fl
